Our musical

Welcome back, y’all. This post will be maybe the most important one for me especially, because this is a topic that I love to talk about. As the title already spoiled it for you, I will go through the process of how me and my group of friends were a part of making a musical.

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude towards my previous school for this amazing opportunity. It was basically a tradition at our school to have students who loved music to take extra courses in it. Throughout them you would make a musical that would be performed for hundreds of people, although our school was in no way a “musical” school.

A couple of friends and I that I had gotten to know formed a little band. We had a really good drummer and the rest of us played guitar as our main instrument. Thankfully one of my friends also had a lot of experience with the piano and therefore we basically had all we needed to play most of the songs. Obviously, guitar experience allowed one of us at a time to play the bass.

This was in a way something I had always wanted to do but never really knew it until the opportunity presented itself. We would obviously have some limitations to the genres of music our performed songs would be from, but we didn’t let that hinder us. For us, the main thing was to finally perform live songs and play as a legitimate band for the first time in our lives.

The “making sense of it” part

Our class was split into three sections. There would be a team centered around making the visuals, for example, stage props, wardrobe planning, and all that good stuff. The second team would be responsible for writing the plot and assigning the roles. This being a musical, obviously the singers would need to be the main characters.

And so, the pressure was on. We needed to find songs that we liked, that would fit the narrative, that we could perform and learn it all as individuals and together as a band. Fortunately, this part turned out to be way easier than it first seemed. We got a tracklist of 8 songs that we would need to decide the roles of each member for.

I have been a musical person for my whole life, and I had picked up my first guitar three years prior to this, so I was already advanced, and my role was pretty much solidified as the lead guitarist. My best friend, who also was a part of our band, had also been playing the guitar for the better part of two years at the time, so his fate was the same as mine. Now what I did not know was that I would also sing. If you had told me that a few months earlier, I would have socked the eardrums out of myself. Yet here we were. Partially this was self-inflicted since I wanted to perform a black metal song... (I Am the Black Wizards by Emperor) for those of you wondering. The song requires a different kind of vocals that our singer could not produce. Now I, on the other hand, have learned to do those vocals out of pure curiosity.

Then the day of the first performance came, and everything went even better than I could have imagined. We were SO satisfied. Easily the best project that I have been part of.

Also, as a side note about my language learning goals, I have been learning at a fast pace. I especially feel more confident in my spoken English by the day.
